For many Mercedes-Benz owners, the ECO start/stop facility has been a very frustrating subject and there have been endless requests for a way to permanently disable it, without much success.

A temporary fix will last for the duration of a journey but once the car is turned off and then back on again, the ECO start/stop function is restored. Understandably, this can be incredibly annoying for city drivers or those who find themselves in heavy traffic on a regular basis. Many drivers feel it changes the feel of driving and in some cases, have been enough to turn off potential buyers from investing in a Mercedes-Benz.

What is the ECO start/stop function?

Many new Mercedes-Benz cars come with the ECO start/stop function fitted as standard. It can be a useful function for some drivers as it can reduce emissions and save on fuel consumption. When you start your car - with your seat belt fastened and the door closed - the ECO start/stop feature is automatically activated. A green symbol will light up (on some models) to confirm that the function is on and working. Once activated, the car's engine will cut off whenever you are stationary (at traffic lights, at roundabouts, in traffic etc). Once the car starts moving again, the engine will restart as soon as your foot is off the brake. You can turn off the function by pressing the ECO button, but this only lasts for the one journey and once the car is switched off, the factory settings are restored.

Not everyone is a fan of this ECO stop/start technology, however, and there have been many people put off by this annoying feature, finding it increasingly frustrating having to turn the button off every time they start their car.

Can I disable the eco stop/start function?

There are a few ways to disable this function, including pressing the ECO button on every journey, going into the car's settings and disabling the function, but, again, these options only last for that one journey. Once the car is switched off and on again, the ECO stop/start function is fully restored. ECO

Many drivers have taken the car back to the dealerships for them to disable this function, but they refuse to do it, leaving drivers feeling at a loss.

However, there is one way to disable the ECO start/stop function for longer than just one journey - by installing an OBD2 plugin.

What is an OBD2 plug-in?

Firstly, rest assured - this plugin is completely legal and will not affect your warranty. The plugin changes your ECO start/stop setting from the default setting to the "last set mode."

In many cases, if you try and change the settings of the ECO start/stop function, it only lasts for one journey. This plugin remembers the settings so that the ECO start/stop function remains switched off until you remove it.

How to fit it

Fitting the OBD2 port is incredibly quick and easy and you can do it yourself, saving you the hassle, time and expense of taking the car to a mechanic.

The location of the OBD2 port can vary, depending on the model that you have. With some models, it can be found inside the passenger compartment. In other models, it can be found on the dashboard or in the centre console.

Once you have located the OBD2 port, turn the ignition but do NOT switch the car on. Put the plugin into the OBD2 port and wait for the main screen to "reboot." Once this has happened, the green light will be off and the ECO start/stop function will be disabled. The ECO stop/start function will remain available, however, should you wish to use it, but please note that the car will remember the last state it was left in. So, if you have the ECO start/stop off when you turn off the car, the car will start with it off. If you have it on when you switch off the car, it will be on when you next start the car.

Is it permanent?

No, you can remove the plugin at any time and the default settings will return, so that means you can use our module disable eco stop/start at any time and enable as well and you can do it unlimited time free of charge.

How to remove the plug-in

To remove the plugin, turn the ignition but do not switch the car on. Simply remove the plugin and wait for the main screen to reboot. Turn the car off and on again to check that the ECO start/stop function has been reset to the default setting.
